Family Planning NSW moves to Newington

Family Planning NSW will move from its Ashfield clinic to a new state-of-the-art centre of reproductive and sexual health excellence in Newington. The move will bring essential research, education, and patient care closer to priority groups around Parramatta.

The $20 million facility includes a major investment of $3.75 million from NSW Health and will allow Family Planning NSW to conduct up to 10,000 health care appointments, provide specialised reproductive and sexual health education to 1,500 students, and coordinate 250 clinical placements each year.

Family Planning NSW CEO Adjunct Professor Ann Brassil said the move is the culmination of a decade of planning and will see important services like vasectomy, IUD insertion, surgical abortion and colposcopy delivered through a state-of-the-art day surgery.

"Since 2010, we have been working to upgrade and relocate our existing clinical sites to ensure we are reaching people in areas of greatest reproductive and sexual health need in New South Wales," A/Prof Brassil said.

"The Newington site will be a state-wide centre for patient care, and a hub of excellence for reproductive and sexual health education, research and international development.

"Importantly, the move brings us closer to local communities with more young people and people who may be new to Australia or from a non-English speaking background. Ensuring access to healthcare for priority populations is one our key goals."

A/Prof Brassil said the Newington facility will be closer to home for many existing clients in western and south-western Sydney, while still being accessible for those living in and around Ashfield.

"We are excited to join the fast-growing Greater Parramatta region and bring our reproductive and sexual health services closer to communities in need," A/Prof Brassil said.

"At the same time, long-term Ashfield clients are going to love the new site at Newington as it offers the very latest in reproductive and sexual health services and is easy to access with increased parking and public transport available."

Family Planning NSW procured the site at 10 Avenue of the Americas in late 2019 and has conducted extensive renovations to create an administration and clinical facility, which will not only provide important healthcare to patients, but will also extend our already highly regarded professional education services for the next generation of reproductive and sexual health workers.

The new clinic will open its doors to clients January 2022. Family Planning NSW retains its existing fixed clinics in Penrith, Fairfield, Dubbo, and Newcastle, and conducts outreach services in Blacktown, Campbelltown, Cobar, Nyngan, Maitland and Raymond Terrace.
