Clinical Placement for IUD Insertion Training

Course description

Are you a Medical Practitioner, Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner interested in becoming an IUD inserter within your own clinical setting? This course blends online learning, face-to-face workshop and clinical placement to equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to provide safe insertion of IUDs to clients.

Content includes:
  • Types of IUDs
  • Pre-insertion assessment of clients
  • Practise of insertion techniques
  • Management of IUD related problems
  • Case discussion

Who should attend?

Doctors and eligible nurses and midwives who wish to offer IUD insertion in their clinical practice.

Course structure

It is essential participants complete the required activities before attending the workshop to gain critical knowledge and ensure full participation during the course.

Participants have access to the online learning 2 weeks before the workshop.

 

Pre-workshop activities

Completion of online learning which takes approximately 5 hours.

Completion of a predisposing activity (RACGP requirement) prior to attendance.

Face-to-Face Workshop

3 hour workshop, completion of a reinforcing activity (RACGP requirement).

Clinical Placement

Clinical placement (supervised clinical attachment) up to 2 clinical sessions (16 hours approximately). Participants must complete the clinical placement within 3 months of attending the workshop.

 

Participants are expected to travel to any Family Planning Australia clinic to fulfil their course requirements.

 

Placement Booking Instructions

To book your clinical placement dates, follow these steps:

  1. Select your preferred location below.
  2. Select a suitable appointment time and book as a New Patient.
  3. Once you have submitted your initial booking, choose your remaining dates with the same account.
  4. Ensure your bookings reach a total of 16 hours.
  5. Confirm your attendance by responding to the text reminders sent by HotDoc.

Eligibility / Prerequisite

Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Doctors must have the following:

  • Be a qualified medical practitioner with at least two years postgraduate clinical experience
  • Current unconditional general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Adequate professional indemnity insurance which is the sole responsibility of the participant - you acknowledge and agree that in participating in this training course, you are providing healthcare services. Accordingly, you are liable for, and indemnify Family Planning Australia against, any liability in respect of or arising from your provision of healthcare services including any acts or omissions on your part. Family Planning Australia hold their own insurance which will not cover you in relation to your own acts or omissions. You accept responsibility for making enquiries with your medical indemnity insurer (either privately held or through your employer) as to what cover is available to you under that insurance and as required by the Medical Board of Australia Registration Standard.

It is preferred applicants have:

  • Considerable experience in women's health and gynaecology and have well-developed bimanual pelvic examination skills
  • Extensive experience in contraceptive counselling
  • Undertaken a Family Planning Australia Certificate or equivalent

Registered Nurses must have the following

  • Be a qualified registered nurse or endorsed Nurse Practitioner with at least two years postgraduate clinical experience
  • Current unconditional nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance, which can be either personally obtained or through place of employment which is the sole responsibility of the participant
  • Adequate clinical support by a medical practitioner in their own practice
  • Considerable experience in women's health and gynaecology and have well-developed bimanual pelvic examination skills

It is preferred applicants have:

  • Extensive experience in contraceptive counselling
  • Undertaken a Family Planning Australia Certificate or equivalent

Assessment

The assessment requirements include satisfactory completion of online learning, workshop attendance and successful completion of IUD clinical competencies. 

Course cost

$1,620.00

Recognition / Accreditation

Participants who complete all assessment requirements for both Modules 1 and 2 will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.

This education is a CPD Accredited Activity under the RACGP CPD Program. The activity ID is 403379

Nurses/ Midwives

Family Planning NSW endorsed tick

This module is equivalent to 24 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
