CHCEDU003: Provide sexual and reproductive health information to clients
Course description
The sexuality of people with intellectual disability has often been feared and misunderstood. While disability rights are now entrenched in law, people with disability are still denied sexual health education, access to reproductive and sexual health services and the right to have relationships and marry that the rest of society takes for granted. As trusted people in their clients' lives, disability workers are well placed to provide support on healthy relationships and sexuality that many of their clients have never had the chance to learn.
This course takes a holistic and right-based approach to supporting reproductive and sexual health. Participants will learn about best practice principles for educating people with intellectual disability and use discussion and case scenarios to explore the balance between duty of care with dignity of risk. Learning activities are used to build confidence in proactively supporting clients with intellectual disability around relationships, sexuality and sexual health.
